CELTIC FC Foundation link up with Eric Liddell Centre

Thursday 22nd February 2018

CELTIC FC Foundation is delighted to announce the launch of the first of our #LionsLegacy dementia care projects - as we link up with Edinburgh-based charity, the Eric Liddell Centre, to deliver a project with a difference.

Following a range of fundraising events across six wonderful days in May, honouring the 50th anniversary of Celtic’s 1967 European Cup victory, the #LionsLegacy campaign saw an incredible £2million raised – and Wednesday’s launch represents the first in a series of ground-breaking initiatives to support projects across the UK and beyond.

Titled ‘Liddell Lions Lunch Breaks’ and jointly aiding dementia care provision, this project will work with individuals living with the condition as well as their carers. ‘Liddell Lions Lunch Breaks’ operates on a simple, friendly and inclusive approach, prioritising responsive and engaging activities for both carers, and people living with early to mid-stages of dementia.

Working alongside Celtic FC Foundation, the Eric Liddell Centre is a registered care charity and major Edinburgh community hub, providing a wide range of services dedicated to inspiring, empowering and supporting people of all ages. The ELC specialises in care for the elderly and dementia services with the aim of supporting people to remain in their own homes for as long as possible.

John MacMillan, CEO of the Eric Liddell Centre, said: “We are honoured to be working alongside Celtic FC Foundation in what is a vital project in terms of improving the quality of life among people with dementia as well as their carers. The sessions here will provide a positive impact on health and wellbeing and will hopefully encourage improved social interaction among the participants.”

Representatives from the Foundation, including Bertie Auld, a member of Celtic’s 1967 Lisbon Lions side, attended the first session.

Tony Hamilton, CEO of Celtic FC Foundation, added: “It was great to see this get off the ground. The people involved at the centre are magnificent. They care passionately about their clients and we’re delighted to be able to partner with them for this initiative.”
