Join the road to milan cycle in 2020

Thursday 22nd August 2019

IN 2017, a wonderful group of supporters honoured the 50th anniversary of Celtic’s 1967 European Cup victory, by cycling 1,300 miles from Celtic Park to the Estadio Nacional in Lisbon. The event, led by supporter Paul Muldoon, raised an incredible total of £73,616.68 for three charities.

Three years later, Paul and a number of the group will be getting back on their bikes in May 2020, to once again raise funds for Celtic FC Foundation, as they now aim to take on The Road to Milan cycle.

May 6, 2020 will mark the 50th anniversary of Celtic’s European Cup final in Milan’s San Siro stadium. On that occasion in 1970, the Celts were defeated after extra-time by Dutch side Feyenoord but the encounter signified yet another incredible achievement, with the Hoops reaching two European Cup finals in the space of only four years.

Setting off from Paradise, the cyclists will head for Newcastle and the ferry to Rotterdam, the home of the 1970 cup winners, Feyenoord. The route will then see the group travel through The Netherlands, Belgium and France, before arriving in Italy, for the final leg, from Turin to Milan.

Following arrival in Milan, the group intend to arrange a celebratory event to mark the completion of a monumental challenge.

The estimated cost to take part is £2,155 (based on 20 participants) and this will be confirmed once numbers have been finalised.

What is included within the package:

• Detailed route reconnaissance and planning by a professional challenge event agency

• Ferry crossing Newcastle/Rotterdam one way

• Accommodation (twin sharing), including breakfast and dinner on each cycling day

• On the road refreshments and lunch, including energy giving food and drinks on each cycle day

• Support crew and support vehicles including a luggage vehicle, minibus and motorbike

• Carriage of bicycles from Milan back to Glasgow

• Maps with full GPS tracking and directions

What is not included within the package:

• Any meals, snacks or drinks outwith the aforementioned

• Any additional hotel costs over and above the standard room with dinner and breakfast

• Travel to the starting point and return travel from Milan

Cyclists will also have the opportunity to join the Road to Milan, by entering the ride on a stage-by-stage basis. Stages will span two or three-day periods, and the respective packages will include full assistance from the support crew, accommodation, dinner and breakfast. Cyclists joining for a single stage must arrange their own transport to and from each stage.

Speaking ahead of the cycle, Paul Muldoon said: “We look forward to be taking part in another exciting cycle, where we will also aim to raise plenty of funds for Celtic FC Foundation. We’d like to encourage anyone who is interested to contact us if they have any questions or wish to hear more about the cycle.”

Celtic FC Foundation Chief Executive, Tony Hamilton added: “I would like to sincerely thank Paul and all the other cyclists who took part in the Road to Lisbon cycle back in 2017.

“An incredible total was raised and their support was truly invaluable. We are absolutely delighted that Paul and the team have chosen to raise funds for Celtic FC Foundation once again and I am sure that the Road to Milan will prove to be another tremendous supporter-led event.”

The Road to Milan cycle promises to be another wonderful adventure for all the supporters involved. If you are interested in joining the group for the entire ride or for a specific stage, please contact theroadtomilan2020@gmail.com for further details.
